When must I register for income tax?

You must register as a taxpayer if:

  • You are a salary earner and earn more than R5 000 per month or R60 000 for a full 12 month period;
  • You receive allowances against which expenditure can be claimed;
  • PAYE is deducted from your income.
  • You are a director of a company or a member of Close Corporations (CC).

The following must also register:

  • Any company (including CCs).
  • Any person required by SARS.
  • A sole proprietor (i.e. an individual who is in business in his or her own name), including small businesses.
  • Trusts and beneficiaries thereof if they received taxable income.
  • Commission Taxpayer Service Agent/Consultant and contract workers; or
  • Taxpayers who would like to register voluntarily
Can I get a copy of my IRP5 from SARS?

Your employer is required by law (Para 13(8)  4th Schedule, Income Tax Act) to provide you with a copy of your IRP5.  You can under the following circumstances request a duplicate certificate from SARS:

  • Your employer has ceased trading;
  • Your employer no longer has the relevant records;
  • You cannot trace your employer;
  • SARS has taken legal action against you for submitting outstanding returns.
What is the threshold for submitting a tax return?

If an individual receives less than R120,000 from a single employer for the full tax year AND all allowances were taxed in full (ie you did not get a travel allowance), then you do not need to submit a tax return.

If you have deductions that you wish to claim, you can submit a tax return.

What are the source codes?

The source codes are those obscure codes you need to fill in next to your income or loss on your tax return. They can obtained from this page using our tool...or you can wade through pages and pages of the original booklet issued by SARS on their website
